Eddie Van Halen Responds to Michael Anthony Backlash with an Ultimatum

Eddie Van Halen is pissed. REAL pissed. Just days after Billboard magazine published an interview in which the guitarist commented on the lack of talent of his long time bassist Michael Anthony.

"I've had it with the fuckin' fans"

“I’ve had it with the Van Halen fans. If they don’t shut their fuckin’ mouths. I’ll have Gary Cherone fronting this god damned band again. Then you’ll have something to bitch about.”

“Every note Mike ever played, I had to show him how to play,” Van Halen claims. “Before we’d go on tour, he’d come over with a video camera and I’d have to show him how to play all the parts.” ~E Van Halen

When the news hit the web of Van Halen’s criticisms, it sent fans into a frenzy of haters and Eddie Van Halen bashing.

“So I say one thing about Mikey and everyone loses their minds!” Said the 60 year old guitarist as he chain smokes Marlboros.

“I’ve had it with the Van Halen fans. If they don’t shut their fuckin’ mouths. I’ll have Gary Cherone fronting this god damned band again. Then you’ll have something to bitch about.”
“While I’m talking, I’m gonna tell it all! Dave Grohl has been BEGGING me to be in Van Halen daily for years. I just tell him Dave Grohl, I don’t have the time to find a pen and paper, write out all the lyrics and then teach you how to sing them.”

Eddie did tell Grohl “I tell you what Dave Grohl. I played all the bass on the last album. You can play it on the next album. OK? Will that get you off my back?

Roth has declined to comment.

  5. Fake story. George thorogood would not be able to replace eddie. Eddie is a much better guitarist. George wouldn’t be able to do the lead breaks that eddie does.

  14. I can’t stand David Roth, he got to big for his Britches and went solo, I saw him on an music award and he looked like a dam Junky and sang terrible, Hagar did a dam good job and should have been the one touring with the band.

    • Scott, i’m not really picking on George. It was the first thing that came to me when thinking of what the last thing Van Halen would need. I’m a professional musician and I have a buddy who is a world class Slide/dobro player. He plays all over the world doing his thing. GT plays roots rock. He does a fine job of it, but when it comes down to his slide skills… well I’ve seen better. But it’s music brother. What does it matter what I think? If you like it then there is no reason to to explain his skills, his songwriting. They don’t flip my trigger, but he touches a lot of folks through his music. Different strokes for different folks, as Sly and the Family Stone taught us that. He was a name I pulled out of a hat. I write these to entertain my friends, some go viral. I don’t know why. GT does what he does and I tip my hat to him and his fans. There are too many things in this world to hate, so George, Sammy, Dave, even Eddie. In the big picture this isn’t even a blip. They have all made great music. No one has to pick sides. Why not enjoy both versions of Van Halen. I prefer the Dave albums, but I like the way he writes and his sense of humor. Sammy was a little Self helpish for me, but that, once again is me. I tip my hat to him also. That was very disrespectful to slam MA. Eddie didn’t take over the world alone. it took all four of them.

    • I hope they all do. I have no dog in the hunt. It was just something that came on late at night. I mean no harm. The disrespect of his bandmates make me think Ed forgot that he didn’t become a super star alone. it took all four of them.

    • Pa-lease…. He Eddie isn’t that great. Not as great as Randy Rhoads.. If not for Randys passing. Eddie would most likely not be where he’s been allntyese years and with the success. Really he’d likely still be playing in clubs

      • By the time Randy died in ’82, Van Halen had already recorded 5 albums and sold 39 million copies of them. Your comment is ridiculous.

      • Wrong. Rhodes came later and tried to copy EVH as much as possible..but to no avail. That means he could not copy Eddie… because I can tell you are “challenged.”

      • two different guitar players. when you are at that level there is no better, just different. Randy left us some great work, Eddie also. why compare? Just dig what we have. You don’t have to choose, and since it’s opinion there will never be a right or wrong answer. Be glad we had/have them both

    • Not to dismiss your claims, But Eat em and smile was a killer album. Dave played the part dave does best. He entertains and can turn a verse. You would have some killer instrumentals but Dave co wrote those songs. So he left/fired (depending on who you ask. Sammy left/fired (depending on who you ask, Michael was left behind to make room for Ed’s boy, who never paid his dues. There is a common denominator here. and it’s the Van Halen brothers. They have poisoned themselves by being petty jaded rockstars. Ed is already a guitar God, why the need to put down the people who helped put him where he is? or was? without the other three guys all you’d have is Eruption.

      Ed seems like a miserable person, and very petty. If everyone sucked so bad, why wouldn’t he go out and play with world class players? Maybe because he wouldn’t have total control over any other band. He’s stayed where he is safe. He has played it safe all along. The only one of the solo guys who ever pushed the envelope was Roth. Sammy still sounds like sammy, ed like van Halen, but the last dave album was a total take off from the norm. I like what he was trying to do. I don’t think he hit the mark but came close. Give the man props for thinking outside the box.

  28. Hear Van Halen lately . . .they need vocals bad cause Roth was one of the best, still a great showman, but he lost the ability to sing in key. Doesn’t matter who plays guitar he’s destroying the band. They are so done . . . love the records, can’t stand to listen to them live!

  30. all I have to say is what are they thinking being a working musician myself I no that any member of a band can be replaced its who they chose to replace the member with that make it work or not but George thorogood don’t get me wrong I like George and his music but as the main guitarist in VAN HALEN you’ve got to be joking all I can say is good luck let me know when van halen has guitar try outs

  37. I’m marching to Mars. I laughed myself to tears. That was funny shit. The best line was GT teaching MA the bass line to Bad To The Bone as if he couldn’t figure out that note on his own. Thought I was going to actually die laughing.
